Background
|
|
To strengthen power continuity and reduce the risk of downtime during utility disturbances and
switching events, a data center expanded its power infrastructure by adding Uninterruptible
Power Supply (UPS) battery systems. These batteries were intended to provide immediate backup
power for critical IT loads and support stable operations during short interruptions.
The facility’s existing monitoring and control environment was standardized on EtherNet/IP.
However, the newly selected UPS battery systems communicated using CANopen. To fully realize
the benefits of the UPS deployment, the operator needed the battery systems to be monitored
and managed within the same EtherNet/IP based tools already used for the rest of the power
infrastructure.
A key requirement was to integrate the new UPS battery systems without redesigning the existing
control architecture or introducing unnecessary complexity.

Solution
|
|
To address this challenge, the data center deployed the GT200-EI-CO CANopen gateway as the
integration layer between the UPS battery systems and the facility’s monitoring environment.
The GT200-EI-CO provided a simple and reliable way to connect CANopen-based battery systems to
an EtherNet/IP network. This approach allowed the operator to add UPS battery capability while
preserving existing network standards, monitoring platforms, and operational workflows.
The GT200-EI-CO was configured to collect both operational and diagnostic data from the UPS
battery systems and make that information available through the EtherNet/IP environment.
The data exposed to operators included battery availability and readiness, state of charge and
estimated runtime, active alarms and fault conditions, as well as indicators related to battery
health and degradation. From an operational perspective, the newly installed UPS battery systems
appeared as standard Ethernet connected assets within the existing monitoring platform.

Results

With the GT200 EI CO in place, the data center successfully brought the new UPS battery systems
online with minimal integration effort. The gateway enabled deployment without changes to the
existing architecture, provided centralized visibility into battery status and alarms, and
supported faster commissioning compared to custom integration approaches. Engineering and
validation efforts were reduced, and the solution established a scalable model that can support
future power system expansion.
